I used to get what I can only describe as killer pms. My moods were all over the place, my skin would be tender to touch – and the thought of anyone even so much as brushing past my breasts would have me screaming in pain. And all this joy would start at least two weeks before my period was due. You know you have problems when you actually look forward to the day your period starts.

And I’ve tried a lot of things to try sort this problem out, from the pill (which quite frankly drove me to the edge) to yoga.

So here are just 10 natural ways that can help you combat PMS for good.

1. Keep Track:

Writing a symptoms diary can help. Recognise what’s going on throughout the month by noting how you feel from day to day. You can then schedule things to coincide with specific times. For example if you tend to feel great for a few days during your cycle, that’s the time to go to a job interview or meet up with that hot guy for coffee.

2. Tackle the symptoms:

Many PMS symptoms can be easily controlled using natural remedies. For acne try taking a 15mg zinc tablet each day. Peppermint essential oil is a great to treat migraines. If you’re suffering from bloating then you can benefit from drinking ginger tea.

3. Take vitamins and minerals:

Studies show that a lack of various nutrients can increase PMS symptoms. These include magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, B vitamins, iron and zinc. In one study, it was revealed that 50-80% of women with PMS were deficient in magnesium. To increase your magnesium levels then start adding more spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds and black beans to your diet.

According to researchers, your body needs 500 extra calories a day in the run up to your period as that is when your iron levels are at their lowest. On those days, have a healthy mid morning and mid afternoon snack. Don’t reach for the biscuit tin though because sugar will only make things worse. Instead, load of up on healthy, vitamin rich foods such as avocado and oily fish.

8. Take essential oils:

Some studies suggest that gamma linolenic acid (GLA) helps to reduce PMS symptoms such as irritability, stomach cramps and breast pain. You can find it in evening primrose oil, coconut oil and almond oil.

9. Take herbs:

A plant called agnus cactus is popular in the treatment of PMS. Research suggests it can improve symptoms by more that 50 percent. St John’s Wort can also help, but it can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill.

10. Cut them out:

Salt, sugar, coffee and alcohol have all been linked to PMS symptoms. Salt causes bloating, alcohol can worsen your mood, caffeine can increase breast tenderness and sugar exacerbates food cravings.

To reduce your risk of cancer, then look no further than your own fridge. This is because certain foods you can cut off the blood supply that feeds cancer cells and reduce inflammation meaning that by choosing the right foods you can literally starve cancer.

The Iowa Women’s Health Study found that women with the highest amounts of garlic in their diets had a 50 percent lower risk of certain colon cancers than women who ate the least.

But what is true beauty? In terms of males and females, the concept can become blurred. Males are said to be visual creatures and with that, the idea of beauty has been inflated. The way that males really see beauty though is to look at their surroundings and look at those they spend time with and feel comfortable with. This is actually the opposite of inflated ideas of beauty like the posters or advertisements. We should observe whom they enjoy spending time with, laugh with and drop their guard for.

Beauty is then stated to be natural and free, but it can be hard to get there. There are so many messages and information being given to us all at once and with all of this, the idea of true beauty can easily be lost.

The fact is we place a lot of emphasis on first impressions and we often judge people by the way they look. The first thing that we see is the physical appearance and this is our weakness.

As we place so much emphasis on the physical we often lose sight of the quality and the beauty that we already have. If you focus on the beauty that lies within then you are more likely to receive true communication with someone else.

Is then true beauty what we have decided to project and what we want to put into the world? Is true beauty not just to be happy and to project this out into the world demonstrating that no matter what you are happy with whom you are and the true nature of yourself.

It can be hard to just let go, but by doing this you will start to show true beauty.

You should do things that make you happy whether it is to see a movie, go treat yourself to something nice, go for a hike or anything else that exists for you. When you do the things that make you content it will show and thus exude that you are a confident person that knows who they are. Others will see this and in return will be drawn to you.
