Turmeric – Why you need this superfood in your life

If you’re a fan of curries then you may already be familiar with turmeric. But this golden spice isn’t just for adding flavour. It’s also the most powerful herb on the planet at fighting and potentially reversing disease.

So we’ve put together the top 5 benefits of turmeric although there are plenty more…

Prevents cancer. It can help prevent prostate cancer, stop the growth of existing cancer cells and even destroy cancer cells.

Controls diabetes. It can help moderate insulin levels. It also improves glucose control and increases the effect of medication used to treat diabetes.

Relieves Arthritis. It has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, meaning that it can help treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It also has antioxidant properties that destroy the free radicals in the body that damage cells.

Reduces cholesterol. Research has shown that using turmeric as food seasoning can reduce cholesterol levels and may help prevent cardiovascular disease. So instead of reaching for the salt, sprinkle a bit of this spice instead.

Immunity booster. With winter fast approaching, we all need some help in boosting our immunity and fighting off colds. This spice is one of the foods with the highest antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is anti-viral, anti-fungal and can help protect against cancer. Inflammation is the cause of many chronic diseases that cause health to deteriorate, so turmeric is your anti-inflammatory superhero! Top Tip: When you mix it with black pepper, you increase your body’s absorption significantly.

Heals wounds. Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent so if you have a cut or maybe a burn, just sprinkle some turmeric on it to speed up the healing process. It can also help to repair damaged skin and is good to use for skin conditions such as psoriasis.

Knowing And Achieving Your Desires Now

When it comes to knowing your desires, you are the best judge.

In order to know what you want, you need to put yourself first and feel secure in the knowledge that you are living your own dream. Take a look at what you need, cogitate on this and list what your priorities are. Determine what it is that makes you truly happy, because once you know this; you know what drives you and what you need to strive for.

But how are you able to achieve the things that you want now?

Just Ask

We often think that we are able to get what we want without asking or being clear about what it is we want. You need to ask for the things that you want and be specific, ask for it clearly and confidently to the person that is able to give it to you, although it will usually be to yourself that you will address these criteria.

Don’t Apologise

It can be hard to ask for what you want and this can often lead to you saying sorry or starting a sentence with justifications. You don’t need to defend your wants and dreams and it is not a a matter of courtesy, as this can seem unconfident. You need to be strong, polite and confident.

You Need to Be Invaluable

Demonstrating that you are invaluable whether it is at work or even in your home. This will often lead to people wanting you around and making it possible through compromise.

What You Want Will Be Fulfilled

It is easy to wish for something, but are you truly prepared to get what you want? Be prepared to have what you want fulfilled. A good exercise for this is to clear your mind and imagine that what you crave is already yours.  How does it make you feel?

You will need to be resolute. You may not get everything you want right away, but don’t be negative just try new approaches to attain the situation you feel you are lacking.

The Power Of Now

The Power of Now is a book by Eckhart Tolle, which shows us how to move past pain, anxiety and stress through the use of ancient teachings and modern thought that is designed to help you balance your life by living moment to moment.

The Power of Now first made its appearance in the 90s and is now a popular book. The book is aimed at those who feel like they are stuck in the past, those that are unable to get past their own heads or for those that feel like they are waiting for happiness to come to them. If you have ever been interested in meditation as a practice or want to try it because of the benefits it offers, then The Power of Now could be the book for you.

What You Will Achieve From The Power of Now

The major focus of this book is how to be consciously present in the moment and what you are able to do for yourself in your everyday life. The book does give you examples and exercises that can help you to understand the concepts and how to use them.

Here is a brief overview of what you will learn.

You Are Not Your Mind

In the first chapter, you will learn what it is to be present, how you are able to be and how the concept will help you to be more aware of things that you do and the reasons that you do them.

Consciousness – The Way Out Of Pain

In this chapter, you will learn that the mind creates personal pain and suffering because you are looking at the past or are longing for the future. You need to learn to be in the present and how to deal with this.

Moving Deeply Into the Now

In this chapter, you can expect how to not identify yourself with your problems, because you can not rid them if you embrace them through identification.

The Inner Body

You will learn how you are able to stay in the present by using your body and also how to really listen to someone without being in your own mind.

Beyond Happiness and Unhappiness There Is Peace

In this chapter, you will learn how to feel peace without necessarily feeling happy.

One thing that you will take away from this book is to not dwell on the past and to also not long for the future, but rather live in the present moment that you are in.

Thoughts For A Happier Outcome

How To Manage Thoughts For A Happier Outcome

Negative thoughts can be turned around into positive experiences that will make us feel happier.

Below you will find tips on how to manage these thoughts so you reach a happier outcome.

Do Yoga

A great way to banish those negative thoughts and feel better about yourself is to practice yoga. In yoga, your thoughts are drawn to your breath, which is relaxing and calms your mind. You will feel better and you will have done some exercise.

Just Smile

It can be hard to smile when you are feeling down, but just by smiling you are able to change your whole mood. You may have to force yourself to do this at the beginning, but it does help to relieve stress.

Be Around Positive People

If you want to feel happier, then you need to be around positive and happier people that you are able to talk to about what you are thinking so that they can help you instead of feeding into your negative emotions.

Change Your Thoughts

You need to change the way you think, so if you have a negative thought, turn it around so that there is a positive outcome at the end and not doom and gloom.

Make the Change

When we are feeling negative it can be easy for us to think that we are stuck in a rut, but this is not true. We have the power to make choices and change any situation.

Help Someone Else

If you are focusing too much on yourself then focus on someone else and do something nice for them. This will make you feel better because you are helping someone that may need it.

Moving Forward

We all make mistakes, but instead of dwelling on them, learn from them and move forward.

Make a List

Create a list of just 5 things that you are grateful for. This will make you appreciate what you already have and as these are positive things, it will help to change your mind-set.

Read Positivity

It is a good idea to surround yourself with positivity, so find some amazing quotes that make you happy or feel good and place them around your house. This way you can read something positive everyday.

It is difficult to change the way we think, but by doing things that make us happier we are able to turn negative thoughts into positive ones.

Time For Everything

Scheduling Contingency To Avoid Stress

It is important to schedule your time correctly so that you feel like you have been productive and to help you to avoid stress.

Preparation is important so that you understand what you are realistically able to achieve in the time you have. You need to agenda essential tasks, whilst also making plans for contingencies.

Time is something that we cannot legitimately create more of but we can get more done if we use it efficiently!

How to Create a Schedule

You should set a regular time to do your forecast whether it’s at the start of each week or month or day whatever suits you best.

You can easily create a weekly planner to organise your availability wisely. Firstly establish your work commitments, reflecting the job you have and your personal goals.

Prioritise those vital tasks following onto all other necessary to-do items.

Review list and organise for when you are at your most productive.

Set aside some slots to cope with contingencies and emergencies this way you can rest assured that whatever crops up will be catered for!

Constant interruptions can kill your momentum, so knowing how to manage them can help you to reduce stress. The provision for flexibility will create an ability to reschedule and reprioritise as the need arises.

You are Superwoman after all!!

10 Natural Ways to combat PMS

beat pms for good

I used to get what I can only describe as killer pms. My moods were all over the place, my skin would be tender to touch – and the thought of anyone even so much as brushing past my breasts would have me screaming in pain. And all this joy would start at least two weeks before my period was due. You know you have problems when you actually look forward to the day your period starts.

And I’ve tried a lot of things to try sort this problem out, from the pill (which quite frankly drove me to the edge) to yoga.

So here are just 10 natural ways that can help you combat PMS for good.

1. Keep Track:

Writing a symptoms diary can help. Recognise what’s going on throughout the month by noting how you feel from day to day. You can then schedule things to coincide with specific times. For example if you tend to feel great for a few days during your cycle, that’s the time to go to a job interview or meet up with that hot guy for coffee.

2. Tackle the symptoms:

Many PMS symptoms can be easily controlled using natural remedies. For acne try taking a 15mg zinc tablet each day. Peppermint essential oil is a great to treat migraines. If you’re suffering from bloating then you can benefit from drinking ginger tea.

3. Take vitamins and minerals:

Studies show that a lack of various nutrients can increase PMS symptoms. These include magnesium, calcium, vitamin D, B vitamins, iron and zinc. In one study, it was revealed that 50-80% of women with PMS were deficient in magnesium. To increase your magnesium levels then start adding more spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds and black beans to your diet.

4. Lose excess weight:

Several scientists have discovered that the more overweight you are, the more likely you are to suffer from PMS.

5. Chill out:

Stress is also implicated in PMS. You are more likely to have worse PMS when you are stressed than when you are relaxed. Practice ways of relaxing such as indulging in meditation and mindfulness. Also get yourself booked in to a yoga or pilates class. It may seem like a cliche but it does help.

6. Get Moving:

You may not feel like hitting the gym but exercise can lift your mood as it helps to boost the feel good chemicals in the brain known as Endorphins. Low levels of endorphins have also been implicated in PMS. The key is to move, even if that means just walking the dogs – get those endorphins released.

7. Snack Away:

According to researchers, your body needs 500 extra calories a day in the run up to your period as that is when your iron levels are at their lowest. On those days, have a healthy mid morning and mid afternoon snack. Don’t reach for the biscuit tin though because sugar will only make things worse. Instead, load of up on healthy, vitamin rich foods such as avocado and oily fish.

8. Take essential oils:

Some studies suggest that gamma linolenic acid (GLA) helps to reduce PMS symptoms such as irritability, stomach cramps and breast pain. You can find it in evening primrose oil, coconut oil and almond oil.

9. Take herbs:

A plant called agnus cactus is popular in the treatment of PMS. Research suggests it can improve symptoms by more that 50 percent. St John’s Wort can also help, but it can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill.

10. Cut them out:

Salt, sugar, coffee and alcohol have all been linked to PMS symptoms. Salt causes bloating, alcohol can worsen your mood, caffeine can increase breast tenderness and sugar exacerbates food cravings.

PMS is no laughing matter and if you suffer from this imbalance then you’ll know what a curse it can be. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t change your habits and thrive, even on the run up to your period.

5 Cancer fighting foods you should eat every day

cancer fighting foods

October is breast cancer awareness month and it’s a subject very close to our hearts here at Maison Du Vann.

Food is also another matter very close to our hearts so we’ve put together some top tips on cancer fighting foods that you should eat every day.

To reduce your risk of cancer, then look no further than your own fridge. This is because certain foods you can cut off the blood supply that feeds cancer cells and reduce inflammation meaning that by choosing the right foods you can literally starve cancer.

First of all, here’s a list of foods that increase inflammation and cancer risk:

  • Sugar
  • Refined oils
  • Refined carbohydrates
  • Conventional dairy products
  • Farm-raised meats

So when it comes to choosing the best cancer-fighting foods here’s a list of 5 foods to include in your daily diet.

Leafy green vegetables. Let’s be honest, there’s not a superfoods list that doesn’t include leafy greens. This is because they’re packed full of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, enzymes all whilst being low in calories, fat and salt. Be sure to have your daily dose of leafy greens such as spinach, kale, collard greens which are rich in anti-oxidants and known to help combat cancer.

Berries. Also known as natures candy, berries supply vitamin C, vitamin A and gallic acid, a powerful anti-fungal/antiviral agent that increases immunity.

Berries are especially rich in proanthocyanidin antioxidants, which have been observed to have anti-aging properties in several animal studies and are capable of lowering free radical damage. High amounts of phenols, zeaxanthin, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, lutein and polysaccharides are other berry benefits.

Tomatoes. This is good news for me because I love my tomatoes. Plus they’re at their most beneficial when they are cooked meaning that you can have an extra scoop of pasta sauce without the guilt. This juicy fruit is a source of lycopene, a carotenoid that gives tomatoes their red hue. And that’s good news, because lycopene was found to stop endometrial cancer cell growth in a study in Nutrition and Cancer.

Walnuts. Their phytosterols (cholesterol-like molecules found in plants) have been shown to block estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, possibly slowing the cells’ growth,

Garlic. Phytochemicals in garlic have been found to halt the formation of nitrosamines, carcinogens formed in the stomach (and in the intestines, in certain conditions) when you consume nitrates, a common food preservative. The Iowa Women’s Health Study found that women with the highest amounts of garlic in their diets had a 50 percent lower risk of certain colon cancers than women who ate the least.

Of course not all health problems are avoidable but you have better control over things when you look after your heath. By making smart food choices, you can protect your health, feel better, and boost your ability fight off cancer and other diseases.

Thoughts Change Our Mood

Why We Allow Thoughts To Change Our Mood Feelings And Anxiety And How To Properly Deal With Them And Use Them To Our Advantage

The way that we think can affect our mood as the thoughts we have creates the feelings we experience. What we choose to focus on is usually what we get, so if we perceive the negative then our temperament will reflect this. Our thoughts, and thus our moods, are shaped by the meaning that we assign to experiences and events.

We all want to be happy and we are in a constant pursuit of happiness, but we all experience pessimistic beliefs. There are ways that we can turn this around and use them to our advantage to create optimism.

Feeling Anger

Anger is a fuel that we can use to our advantage or it can become highly destructive. You can’t ignore your anger, but the key is to recognise it and deal with it. Gather your thoughts before you take action. How are you best able to express your anger and direct it in a constructive manner that it betters the situation and everyone in it.  There will be times where your anger may appear to need an instant response and this is where self control and introspection is required e.g. what is actually the problem.

Being Sad

Sadness is a powerful emotion that can easily lead us to be lethargic, depressed or self-pity. This is best used as a motivating tool. Do you miss someone or something, if so then remedy that situation.

Being Scared

Understanding our fears can help us to face them. Most of us have some type of unfair prejudices and biases against others, but we need to think about what in our lives has influenced this feeling.

We are all capable of turning downbeat thoughts and exercising control over them.

Emotions And Healthy Eating

Food rainbow

The way that we feel can be influenced by the foods that we eat. Certain foods can lead to good or bad moods. Emotions are linked to healthy eating.

Our frame of mind is kept in balance with vitamins, proteins and carbohydrates obtained from food and low temper can be caused by alcohol, sugar and caffeine.

Foods to Eat to Stay Calm

Good nutrients to eat to stay calm are leafy greens, pumpkin seeds and almonds. Pumpkin seeds and leafy greens contain magnesium, which is a calming mineral that becomes depleted when we stress. Almonds and pumpkin seeds are high in gamma-aminobutyric acid and tryptophan, which has calming effects and help us to sleep.

Foods to Eat to Be Happy

Folates like beans, peas, sunflower seeds and spinach, vitamin B6 like seeds and leafy greens and vitamin B12 like meat, fish and poultry.

Homocysteine is an amino acid and high levels can cause depression, but foods with B vitamins can help to maintain the balance. B6 aids in the production of adrenaline, which helps us to combat stress.

Anxiety can be reduced by consuming nuts, leafy greens, eggs and legumes, as these are packed with vitamin B and help create serotonin.

Keeping blood sugar levels in check can aid in stabilising moods. Chromium, which is found in tomatoes and onions will contribute to regulating blood sugar as they are essential in producing insulin.

To fight off depression it is recommended to consume foods that contain omega 3 fatty acids like flaxseed and fish. Also, serotonin can be increased with red meat, poultry and whole grains, which can also help. Good whole grains to eat are quinoa and brown rice.

More Energy

Intake of proteins that are high in B12 like seafood and leafy greens. Also, eating lean beef, eggs and lamb increase levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, which helps your brain to get up and go.

Stay Focused

Boost your levels of concentration with fare that contain tyrosine, which increases dopamine and norepinephrine e.g. bananas, avocados, poultry and beans. Seeds, beans and nuts contain zinc and use omega 3 fats for the production of prostaglandins, which is needed for a higher level of concentration.

The food that we eat has an affect on our mood, so eating a healthy and balanced diet will make us feel good about ourselves, whilst also boosting our temperament.

What Is The True Meaning Of Beauty?

Beauty has been defined in thousands of ways and each of these definitions has varying degrees. The concept of what beauty is has been debated, written about and studied for years.

But what is true beauty? In terms of males and females, the concept can become blurred. Males are said to be visual creatures and with that, the idea of beauty has been inflated. The way that males really see beauty though is to look at their surroundings and look at those they spend time with and feel comfortable with. This is actually the opposite of inflated ideas of beauty like the posters or advertisements. We should observe whom they enjoy spending time with, laugh with and drop their guard for.

Beauty is then stated to be natural and free, but it can be hard to get there. There are so many messages and information being given to us all at once and with all of this, the idea of true beauty can easily be lost.

The fact is we place a lot of emphasis on first impressions and we often judge people by the way they look. The first thing that we see is the physical appearance and this is our weakness.

As we place so much emphasis on the physical we often lose sight of the quality and the beauty that we already have. If you focus on the beauty that lies within then you are more likely to receive true communication with someone else.

Is then true beauty what we have decided to project and what we want to put into the world? Is true beauty not just to be happy and to project this out into the world demonstrating that no matter what you are happy with whom you are and the true nature of yourself.

It can be hard to just let go, but by doing this you will start to show true beauty.

You should do things that make you happy whether it is to see a movie, go treat yourself to something nice, go for a hike or anything else that exists for you. When you do the things that make you content it will show and thus exude that you are a confident person that knows who they are. Others will see this and in return will be drawn to you.

Your real beauty is found inside and letting this flow achieves the true state of beauty.
