We have been told many times that the measure of our success in getting fit and healthy is not dominated by the scales.  There are many aspects of weightloss that cannot be told by a number.

The immediate benefit of ditching the scales are that the random (yes they are) numbers that fluctuate will not influence your morning mood, no number increase thus no bad mood.  It is madness determining how our day will go by what is showing on a dial!

All we actually need is to maintain a healthy eating regimen and a good exercise plan to ensure that we keep weight off.  There is no miracle cure, pills, potions and lotions it is simple common sense.

Weightloss can be attributed to water loss hence you drink your daily quota and bingo we are back to the problem of increasing digits.  Muscle does not weigh more than fat it is denser which would affect the results only if you are tracking it by scales, however, many people look incredible with toned and shaped muscle and clothing fits better, this is the proof that you are healthy and fit.

The goal is to be toned and in the best physical shape not that which is displayed by a label, graph or any other device.

Exercise teaches your body how to release more fat-burning molecules. The fitter you are, the more fat you burn and that is something the scale can’t measure.

Increase Energy Naturally In Weight Loss

Levels drop when we are in diet mode and fatigue is an altogether common side effect.  We can combat this naturally by following these easy tips:

Drink water all day long, dehydration is one of the most common causes of fatigue, crankiness and foggy thinking.  Even before your thirst mechanism kicks in (typically after the body’s hydration level has dropped by 2.6%), you’ll experience lethargy.  The Institute of Medicine suggests adequate fluid intake for women is 9 cups or 2.2L per day, and for men 13 cups or 3L a day. One trick to make sure you’re getting enough is to buy 3 one-litre bottles and make sure you get close to finishing them by the end of the day.

Posture, Slouching doesn’t just make you look tired – it makes you feel tired too, because it places excess strain on your back and hips. Plus, when your joints aren’t properly aligned, your whole body has to work harder than it should.  Additionally, standing or sitting tall will improve the flow of oxygen to your brain, which increases your alertness and attentiveness.

Circadian rhythm, open the curtains and sit in a sunny window or stop outside periodically. Environmental cues play a huge role in the body’s energy cycles throughout the day. Regular exposure to light has been shown to maintain higher energy levels in people suffering from fatigue. Exposure to natural sunlight can also enhance your mood. If you work in a windowless environment, try to step outside for some light therapy for 5 minutes every hour if possible.

Clean Eating

There’s no one specific definition for eating a clean diet, but it’s mostly about avoiding refined foods and things that are heavily processed, and avoiding unhealthy foods that contain extra fats, excess sodium and added sugars.

The rules to eating a clean diet are simple – stick with foods closest to their natural state. Avoid foods with preservatives and colourings. Drink plenty of water, but avoid alcohol and sugary beverages.

Dietary fat, sodium and sugars should only be found in their natural states – avoid foods that use them as added ingredients.  And avoid artificial trans fats altogether.

Avoid refined grains like bread, pasta and cereal made from white flour, but feel free to add whole-grain pasta, bread and cereal. Keep an eye on food labels – buy 100-percent whole grain products, not foods ‘made with whole grains,’ that also contain refined flour.

Clean eating means; all fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, and whole grain products made without preservatives.

Fresh meat, poultry, fish and seafood are fine, without heavy breading, sauces or creams.

Dairy products are fine as long as they don’t contain extra flavourings.

Cooking methods count in a clean eating plan, too. Baking, broiling, roasting and steaming are best. Avoid dishes that must be fried. Use fresh herbs and spices to season.

Eat a balanced diet with low-fat calcium sources, a small amount of healthy omega-3 and monounsaturated fats and lean protein sources.

The Royal Family are well known and revered for their penchant to reuse items, in particular fashion and accessories. Most of us in the know will appreciate the brilliance of upcycling our belongings. Vintage and retro chic are still all the rage so with this in mind here are a few tips to do just that!

1. Rings

If you have any rings that you no longer care to wear or they have become uncomfortable but you still love the design and lustre of the gleaming trophies, adorn your scarf with them, they make excellent decals and can be secured by simply fixing with a bow or a tied knot.

2. Brooches

Fantastic as details on hair dos, finishing touches to an elegant hairstyle be it braids or a bun, look stunning with this added accessory.

3. Luggage

Sturdy old trunks can be recovered in luxe fabrics and will create a beautiful addition to any room, be it stacked for a feature to catch they eye, or for something more useful such as storage or bedside tables.

4. Mirrors

Create a haven in your outside space by adorning it with some magical mirrors, broken is also fine as it adds to the character.  Ensure they are backed with water resistant fabric to withstand all climates and just go for it, decorate outside as you would do inside.

5. Tables

Got an old dining table that isn’t quite the right shape or dimension? Find a carpenter who can build you a top out of MDF and then cover it in any fabric you desire.  He can then fix the new top to the existing base and you have the perfect dining table.

Here’s how to make it…

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

2/3 cups of almond milk

1 cup of Greek yogurt

1/2 cup of your favorite berries (blueberries are best!)

1/2 an avocado

Handful of spinach or kale

1 tsp. cinnamon

Generous drizzle of organic honey

1 small banana

A few ice cubes (more for a frostier smoothie, fewer for a creamier one)

How To Deal With Cellulite

Cellulite is the appearance of your normal fat cells underneath the surface of the skin, it is visible because it causes dimpling where it connects to the layers of the dermis.  It is not a medical condition, nor is it present in people who are overweight.  It can happen any time to anyone!

Many of us deal with cellulite using various treatments together with crash dieting and covering ourselves with fake tan to make it less noticeable on darker skin, whilst giving into the latest fitness craze…Sound familiar?

Factors that can influence how much you will be affected, and usually women suffer more than men:

  • Poor diet
  • Fad dieting
  • Slow metabolism
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Hormone changes
  • Dehydration
  • Total body fat
  • Thickness and colour of your skin

The good news is that it can be solved!! In a bid to rid yourself of this for once and for all try the following:

Exercise

Oblivobesity How To Deal With It

This terminology has been created by Dr David L Katz in his struggle to educate us on how to deal with obesity and those who turn a blind eye to it all.

Incredible as it may seem people are still not acknowledging a healthy lifestyle, as if in some way it will all just ‘go away’.

It is our job as parents to instruct our children on how to eat, exercise and generally live in a fit way.  It is also our jobs to do this for ourselves; we have to practise what we preach.

There is a fine line admittedly between raising awareness and turning ourselves and our offspring into self-obsessed lunatics constantly craving attention and mirrors to bestow a feeling of self-worth in the world.

We need to embrace everything in this life and whilst that also includes all shapes and sizes it has to register on the ‘healthy’ scale.  To do this we need to enlighten ourselves that being healthy and vital leads to a more fulfilled and content living.  Eating well and exercising often is a very important component in that relationship.  We constantly hear the phrase ‘Eat Less, Move More’ but that is basically what it boils down to.

Find a motivation to get you to move, the gym, the outdoors, whatever it may be and then do it. Every morning first thing is great (before our brains can register any pain!) and then it is done and you are set up for the day.

When Exercise Doesn’t Promote Weight Loss

In an article for the British Journal Of Sports Medicine, doctors said we have wrongly emphasised that physical activity can prevent people becoming very overweight.

Here are some reasons as to why:

1. Compensation in reward food.

Self-rewarding with even a banana or a small cake or chocolate bar, can very often result in weight gain because we may be taking on board more calories than we have burned during exercise. It should be noted that we are not moving more so that we can eat more, we should be eating less.  Being physically active is not a reason to consume more, we should stick to the recommended amount.

2. Stress sabotage

We have often talked about the links to stress and the damage that it causes, in the first instance it releases cortisol which in turns affects our appetite (or makes us want to eat more through comfort food).

3. Carb loading

We do not need to up our intake on carbohydrates (pasta, bread, cereal) just because we are exercising.  Eat healthily and stick to your eating regimen.

4. Same Exercise Programme

Vary your routine as this will use different muscle groups and in turn prevents the body and mind from adapting to each circuit and thus keeps the effort up and burning off the calories. The best exercise is the short interval high intensity (HIIT) but don’t keep doing the same circuits, mix it up…

It actually gladdens my heart to see this feature on Marie Helvin at age 62 lighting up the features section.  If anyone was ever in doubt as to whether there are barriers to looking good this should dispel those doubts.

Now is the time for us to stand up and be counted, there is nothing shameful about notching up the years and for society to make us think otherwise is abhorrent.  Stop hiding in the shadows and just be the best you.

Getting older simply means that we are gaining wisdom and that is that.  Matter of fact, using common sense and proportionality.  Cut out of your life that which is non-essential if you don’t need or want it then it is gone.  Sentimentality is an emotion and memories can be retained in our hearts not in possessions. Dress as you always want to dress fashion relies on style so choose what you like and get it altered to suit you.  Dispense with your beauty style from last year always change it up and try something new #LiberateYourself.
